Viktor and Rolf at H&M didnt tickle my fancy, Rituals originally just felt like a me too and I prefer Molton Brown, Hyves was a cute idea but not truly internationally and do I really want to invest in a piece by Supertrash (the name alone doesnt spell classy) - anyway you get the idea.

It was strange to me because I do let my Orange flag fly come football or Queen's Day. I even thought the idea of breathing new life into Spyker was cool (though a little lost), had to laugh when anyone referenced the origin of Big Brother and I adore Dutch interior design with the likes of Marcel Wanders, Piet Boon, Jan de Bouvrie and my ultimate favourite Eric Kuster but I am here to say my opinions have changed... only a little.

I now really like Rituals - but wait there is more. I adore this brand of bags, clutches and wallets that is so good I have to broadcast it. Smaak Amsterdam (smaak is Dutch for taste and in this case good taste) is fantastic. They make affordable, stylish bags that come in so many colours the are truly individual. Here are a few teasers to get your mouth watering. With jewel tones, muted nuances and warm sunny brights - you will for certain find something to suit your outfits.

They translate trends in a smart, polished and stylish way that is affordable. Let's me honest, everyone has something from Zara in their wardrobe and for some of us it is our go to shop.

So I went through their online shop and picked out my must haves for this month. Yes this month because clever as they are every month brings something new to tempt us with.

1. Leather trousers - or leatherette really - I know I mentioned this last year how much I envy the leggy girls who can get away with wearing these but I am now going to take the plunge and find the curvy girl's version. I reckon with enough stretch and the right fit we curvy girls can get away with it too and look pretty fine doing it. So watch this space as to how I get on!

2. Fur vests - when I told my sister I loved this vest she compared me with a grey Big Bird. So needless to say we have very different tastes but I love the length and the colour. So have it on my fav list. I wonder what you think?
3. Studs - studs and more studs - if you saw my earlier post you will have read about my latest obsession and that I think Zara has stayed very true to the Valentino take on studs, keeping them polished. So I thought revamped the ueber popular shopper with studs is genius! I love it.

4. Embellished jackets - or cardies is you prefer. I love combining opposites in fashion - leather with floaty, studs with pastels and here embellished with softness. For me, the 1950s with their collars and pearls and embellishment was too ridgid. It makes me think of Mona Lisa's Smile which immediately makes me cringe in the closed mindedness it portrayed. So this jacket gives the best of boths worlds. Embellished for then, flexible for now.
5. Shoes - A girl can NEVER have too many shoes although in my case she can make a few very odd choices. And these sandals are sexy and so now but also super practical with black tights for winter and bare legged for summer. You could almost call it an investment!

So these are my fav five - how about you? What do you love?
Apparently in the past when the economy was tricky, women indulged in lipstick to cheer themselves up but in today's world it is nail polish.
Chanel gets us up in a Frenzy (literally with the latest shade) with their must have shades of each season. I couldnt resist going for Holiday and Delight this year.

I will admit it doing my nails is therapeutic for me and I will change my nail colour as often as 5 times a week even when on holiday.
I was cheerfully pleased with the result.
When I buy polishes the names also inspire me - and they help me remember which is which. So whether it is OPI Lincoln Park after Dark or Roll in the Hague - the name alone can make me happy. I am a huge fan of the coral tones. They suit my skintone better than red and make a nice switch from black in winter.

But I love how black and greys have become the new staples for winter.
Yes laughing at my own jokes and then outing myself on the never-ending internet - sad I know.
So unless you have been blind - you will have noticed the stud trend and personally I think Valentino started it all. I fell in love love love with a side studded handbag and have now seen clever and thrifty (my catch phrase of the season) at Zara.

But this season Valentino upped the game with the beautiful mixed versions. So you can be a hard punk rock fashionista with the Noir collection.
And it you need to be a little flashy you can go a little pave. So if you are thinking of going the studded route, consider an investment piece from Valentino all to be found on valentino.com online shopping but also try my-wardrobe and luisaviaroma.com.
First off in line with the embellished trend - I love sparkle. In fact I am surprised to find that Zara has been helping me indulge. But I also some amazing ones on my-wardrobe.com So here are few to get you drooling...

Then there is an unexpected newcomer in the field that I honestly wasn't expecting : J.Crew. I love Jenny Lyons with her quirky style and the fact that on their website they do Styles we love which even if it isn't exactly my sense of style it does make me think out of the box and rethink my wardrobe ... being a bit more creative...
So here are my fav picks from J.Crew ... They have fab bangles in leopard, fushia, cobalt blue oh my but also a pave link bracelet that does uptown chique in a new and quirky way.

For me jewellery let's you re-invite an outfit each and every time. In today's world, being thrifty and clever is important so taking your fav black pencil skirt and work white, crisp shirt from last season to being completely up to date - is as simple as finding some super bangles. A smart investment that will work with lots of your favourite outfits - ohhhh and do let me know how you get on!
I know but I lost my mojo!

Really shocking actually, here I am supposed career girl, happy go lucky, cheerful and stylishly smart but then - boom - as out of no where the dreaded word ... burnout. I am still not comfortable with that word because it makes me think of a match burnt to a crisp with no chance of relighting. But that isnt the case for me. It is more a case of losing energy and not being able to re-egnite. Not getting excited or enthusiastic about things that normally thrill me - like fashion or writing on my blog.

But that was then this is now... and I am back - well in baby steps. Working on my energy and the things that make me happy. Revisiting my world. and my work. Maybe this is the dreaded pre-40 crisis that I am feeling. Or maybe just the outcome of 15 years in advertising as an account person being dealt it by both sides. Hmmm I will think that one through and whilst I am still coming to a conclusion I will be back to writing and sharing what I find fashionably inspiring!

Get ready - I am back!Natalie Hoegenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04237071180134125062noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7932687291233220767.post-33488295202128290882011-12-04T19:53:00.001+01:002011-12-04T20:27:19.665+01:00Making a list ...As the song says it is the most wonderful time of the year. I had to admit I am a sucker for Christmas - for me it is all about the lights in the shop windows, the crisp air and the feeling of wanting to return home light candles and cocoon for the evening. Living in Holland it is just not the same so every year I have to kick off the season with a trip to Londo to see the lights. Having lived in Hamburg, New York, London, Paris and Holland I can compare and nowhere does Christmas lights like London. New York and Chicago are fantastic when it comes to shop windows but for simple twinkling white lights you have to visit London. And with only a weekend to do some specific Christmas shopping a list is needed.

I personally am a huge fan of the White Company - which thankfully has more in store for then just white and so many lovely truly induglent gifts. To me Christmas is about giving that gift that you wouldnt necessarily give yourself and that it was makes it truly special.
My mother has the tradition of buying one new Christmas ornament a year but the really special ones are those that we as children bought or gave as a gift.

But if you are short on time and still want special gifts online is the way forward and if I can recommend one website here it is... www.reddirect.co.uk part of Red Magazine Uk and they have amazing gifts ... here is a pick of my favourites...

Maybe it is because I miss London or I think the colour red is linked with Christmas but these Christmas baubbles are too lovely and unique to not mention as a must have.

Or something a little more special than your chocolate advent calender. A calender that will last for years and years which to me really symbolizes the essence of Christmas - it doesnt have to be big just meaningful and from the heart to surprise the person it is for.

And if you are looking for inspiration these prints will do just that. Something to remind yourself of everyday...
I do hope you are making plans for a very specialy Christmas and if I run into any more ideas that completely get me inspired I am warning you I will just have to let you know about them!
After years of moving about it is in my genes, I am sure of it.
I have lived in some pokey furnished flats in London and New York and have had my fair share of nightmare landlords to deal with (I am sure we all have a tale or two to share about those).

One of the reasons I wanted to move to Holland was space - I wanted a flat that 1) could fit my wardrobe comfortably so I can colour coordinate the contents (sad I know) 2) was large enough to let me place my families heirloom furniture in it and 3) light & bright to never ever be pokey again.

When I saw my flat for the first time it was love - just like that. Even though it is in Holland the huge industrial-like windows reminded me straight-away of New York and with a view (from the 12th floor) of the city there are always pretty lights to stare at. Although today it is super foggy which makes you feel as though you are floating in mid-air without any idea of your surroundings and that too is pretty spectular.

The reason I wanted to share this pics of my flat with you is because I am a firm accessories believer in fashion and in my home. Ok some of the furniture is inherited (which means 3B's : big, bulky and brown) but the majority of items are from that well known Swedish furniture haven Ikea and I love it. So style doesnt have to be expensive just clever. Plus the eye can be decived. What's looks silver doesn't have to be real silver or even silver-plated for that matter to give the same effect. I love how mentals reflect light from candles or sunshine. Plus with darker elements in my house I wanted to make sure there was a enough light and airy elements to balance it all out.
I personally believe that we in Holland have some amazing home decorating stores. The likes of Lifestyle and Riviera Maison but even borrowing from our neighbours I think Flamant is fantastic and adore getting inspiration from Eric Kuster, Piet Boon and Jan de Bouvrie. I am after all LUSTING after a velvet sofa from Eric Kuster (if you dont know what to get me for Christmas - that was a subtle hint, no?).

But I also love Rofra Home for deco items, Graham & Green in the UK (divine) and the creative cleverness of West Elm and Crate & Barrel in the US is never to fail (shame we cant even access the website from abroad but I have ranted before about how some US shops are still US only - sad face).

These pictures were taken on a particularly glourious day, so anyone who thinks it only rains in Holland is mistaken and I think this is when my living room is at its best.

I have moved around alot but this home definitely makes me feel like staying just a little longer.

Hope the pictures give you a little inspiration and I added the websites of the others I mentioned for good measure.
Although fashion in recent years has been rekindling lady-like fashion from decades ago - with Marc Jacobs for Louis Vuitton at the forefront - I cant help but wonder does it really translate to today's woman. In the cruel business world does being lady-like help or work against a girl about town? Or is it maybe lady-like in doses depending on the industry you are in?

For example Angela Merkel is without a doubt the strongest lady in Europe with the French president throwing her a flash of a smile or a nudge here and there as a show of partnership - saving the Euro and the world together. But does she come across as lady-like? It is really important for her? Or is she maybe in a boys club and needs a bit more masculinity to be taken seriously?

Same case, different rules - Christine Lagarde - granted is in pencil skirts and feminine fashion but does she strike you as lady-like? In the hard world of finance (let alone the politics that mix in) she being lady-like a good thing?

And what is lady-like in today's world anyway? Am I meant to be the one in a meeting to ask if anyone wishes anything else to drink? Am I supposed to wait for some one to hold the door for me? When trying to make a point do I gently nudge my male colleagues and make it seem like it was their idea? Ok some of these examples could be straight out of Mona Lisa's Smile but what I am trying to say is that today's world means lady-like is refined, smart, savvy and ballsy with a touch of male attitude and a splash of rough and ready. The world demands a clever approach for anyone really and maybe the lady-like look in fashion is just that a clever approach in today's world. Perhaps the gentle touch a hint of curve and the illusion of skin flahsing through are a new hint of mystery that we havent seen earlier - in the years of bandage style minidress - stunning and seductive but less subtle. The midi length in flowy dresses add for kicks and twirls. In my opinion fashion makes you feel confident - a better version of yourself. Just what you need really to take the world by storm. I think I will be putting lady-like fashion to the test and watching for results...with the ultimate result being how I feel. We shall see.
For some it is a much needed girlie lunch, or the day you were proposed to but for others it is just a walk in the park with a loved one. So I tried to really think hard about a top 10 list (obviously the fact that there was far more than 10 moments to choose from made me feel so fortunate)… Maybe this inspires you to do the same.

Me I like my handbags BIG, voluminous and with enough space to carry silly things like my filofax, 2 blackberries, make-up, a camera and a brally (in some case a plant, light, measuring tape but only if a spoon full of sugar is in the picture). So there she was a classic Gucci black bamboo handle hobo with my name on it and one sale so the dream could become reality. I had just been given a EU subsidy for EU students studying abroad and it was immediately put to good use. This is now 12 years on and I still adore this bag and just yesterday was complemented on it. Bless.

So when I saw these shoes and dreses all courtesy of Topshop - it was just too much to take not to share the love. So if you arent feeling the Saturday Night Fever by the of this post - please run out and rent the flick, turn the music loud and boogie the night away.

Here we go...

The Velvet Collection
Velvet is soft, seductive, lush and glamorous so these numbers capture that feeling completely.

This mini dress in a jewel colour is stunning and seriously sexy.

The Maxi version is a little more conservative but by being floaty it has that reserved seductiveness to it which I love.

And the velvet trend even continues on into shoes. These platform bootlets are definitely set to flaunt your pins and give you the height for maximum impact.

The Metallic Collection

Shining, blinging and utterly reflective. Either in the sparkly form or straight up dripping liquid mental. Such as this scalloped toplet to combine with your favourite skinnies to take the world by storm.

I am blaming the September issues... it all started with the Donna Karan ads. I saw a coat - so smooth, so warm, so unattainable I was in love. Then it was everywhere - fur - faux and not so faux. I was torn and adoring all that I saw. In the past I have really thinking it through - how does one do non-bulky fur? Is the style? The type of fur? The length of the item? So many questions and no idea where to begin. So I did what any resourceful young lady with the internet at her finger tips might do. I scoured the internet in search of all that was furry and good. Here are my to adore finds - hopefully they will inspire you...
I love this length because it gives you the chance to belt it or wear it loose bohemian style and if if you are a twiglet over a blazer and layer things up. And if it all just to much - maybe just stick to a collar which can smarten up any coat. I have even been fortunate even to have inherited a few from my grannie - can I say the ones that had the potential to talk to me, bite me or worse were kindly declined. How did women back then wear those things and think they were the height out fashion? That said I had purple and green striped Espirt leggings in the 80s that I thought totally rocked. Hmmm all is relative. So even with the fur trend this season I think the key thing - is keep warm. If the New York blizzard is anything to go by it will get cold soon and that is no reason not be fashionable.

Not to say that you shouldnt mix it up with bootlets, boots, ballerina's galore and not to mention your heel options. But let's be honest ladies, who has more than 5 pairs of black courts in their wardrobe that all fulfill a separate and equally valuable contribution to your look. (Yes the shoe's contribution should never be underestimated - did I mention I am only 1.63 m i.e. 5"3 so I need to compensate)

Now I have gushed about this shop before but if it is good enough for Kate Middleton it is definitely good enough for me. I call LK Bennett (lkbennett.com) the real girl's Jimmy Choo because for us real girls we cant all have a closet full of the priciest of designer finds. I whole-heartedly love jewellery as we have previously established I am always drawn to the glitter and glow.

Maybe it is in the hope that it will rub off and shine on me. But a good piece of jewellery needn't be expensive to transform a look.
This Ileana Makri ring - subtle as it may be does in one moment express who you are. With fine sparkle and a tough exterior it gives you an amazing combination of the two.
But whatever accessory you choose to add sparkle to your look dont over do it. Think Coco Chanel always remove one accessory before you leave the house.
A chance to admire the lights, soak in the Christmas feeling, indulge in mince pies (never thougth I would say that) and just do the London thing. But just this year I find myself getting excited about what to wear. Maybe it is the one evening shot and the true London idea of dressing for the party season that I have been thinking of buying a new frock.
See that is what I love about London, girls do get dressed up (even outside the so-called party season) to go out on the town. I used to laugh at the effort they put into a dinner with friends (or more importantly the tiny dresses, bare legs and glossy sandels on Valentine's Day) but now in one way or another I admire it. Maybe it is due to signs of withdrawal. Dutch style in general is more relaxed. Putting on heels would count as making an effort. And with mags raving about the style efforts of French chique girls. It seems that getting dressed for dinner is old school. Only to be found in films, cruises (if American) and in my grandmother's reference book.
So yesterday I caught myself staring at a shiny black strapless frock that I would never wear again here but would go so well with my net metallic black peeptoes. My desire to search for the ultimate party outfit continued online... See here the results of Fashion Dreaming on Net-a-Porter.com where I saw sparkly dresses, shiny shoes, glamourous clutches. It was just all too much to take in. It did get me thinking, inspired really.
Maybe I am just lusting after all that glitters. I do like the understated elements of cool these days - you know the look as though you stylishly threw the look together with no effort at all. Think Kate Moss. What if I decided to combine the glitter with cool.Tone it down then prehaps it would all become more wearable for here and more inspirational as well. So I have a new goal. Search for dresses that dont necessary work for all occasions but can work in a toned down setting just as well as the glamourous one and might even translate to the cruise setting - should I ever dare to brave the sea ( I saw Titantic 3 times so its not very likely).

Will keep you posted on how my efforts go ... but in the meantime... I have a new shopping mission.Natalie Hoegenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04237071180134125062noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7932687291233220767.post-61992846894515859372011-10-15T18:06:00.001+02:002011-10-15T18:26:32.834+02:00Finding your true self - hello styleJust last week I was really amazed to see this group of girls (maybe just 20) - obviously a tight friend group but also each one with a strong personal and different style. One was the rocker chick with faux leather leggings, big silver jewellery, denim jacket and funky boots. The other tailored trousers, courts and a fitted jacket - not suity but more of a polished look. And finally the third in a boho chique dark floral dress and a faux fur gilet. All super cute and so different.

It was their differences that intriqued me. Most of my friends have more style similarities - makes it easier and more difficult whilst shopping. You know what stores to head out to but then if you have a similar size there is a the element of having to be quick to claim the must have item. Or else your darling friend might snag it.

But more than that I was impressed that they had such a outspoken style. It took me ages to find my true self - my style and to this day I still go astray every now and again. Sorry but it is true, for example I am tempted by the leather trouser look but in all seriousness what am I thinking. Sausage is never a good look. So unless my dieting regime kicks in and produces wonders. I need to step away from anything that remotely resembles a leather trouser.
So how do girls come into their own so soon? Am I jealous? Yeah kind of. Young ladies like Olivia Palermo baffle and inspire me. 12 years my junior (pheww I am old) but with so much creativity. I had never thought of some of the combinations that young lady comes up with.
And take Alexa Chung - still in her twenties and yet has her young Mulberry bag to underline the impact she has on style and trends. Not my personal inspiration but how many girls have you now seen sporting the dark roots, light tips look?

I think it so groovy to see these younger girls already experimenting with trends and finding what they like and suits them. I wish there was more individuality out there. So please if you're reading this - be true to yourself, you have to fit the mold and if you are a mum as hard as it may be (and how horrific you may find it) encouraging a little self expression isnt a bad thing.... most of the time...Natalie Hoegenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04237071180134125062noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7932687291233220767.post-1733696560163813822011-10-09T21:18:00.000+02:002011-10-09T21:18:14.575+02:00Lotions and Potions - Oh My!Hi my name is Natalie and I am sucker for the promise of youth, small pores, glowing skin, plumpness, a flawless finish, no fine lines (or line period), no dark circles - the list is endless.

I go into the cosmetics section and feel a rush like a kid in a very expensive overly promising cnady story. The rush is unreal. And just flipping through a magazine is some times too much to handle. The idea of enteral youth just at my finger tips if I buy this new serum or anti-aging hair repair. Its inspiring and scary that the same time. I wonder if my mother knew that her hair could age her (not the haircut no the hair strands themselves) or that is she bleached her teeth more that too would make her look younger. There is so much we can do or we can think of it is seriously overwhelming at times. With the likes of Demi Moore, Haley Barry, Sharon Stone - the benchmark is high and aging gracefully doesnt really exist not ageing that's the secret.

So the latest list of must haves I dont know where to begin. So I grabbed the nearest UK Marie Claire to see how I get on.

Hmm - baby doll eyes - not sure with that hair I am thinking the mascara is not for me. I am still loyal to my Faux Cils YSL although the new shocking one does make me think of cheating. But its not really cheating is it? YSL wont really mind would he?

Dior Forever - perfect foundation Miss Portman does look flawless but not entirely sure when there is the cheap alternative from Max Factor with serum and foundation in one. The lazy girl's new best friend. Hmmm. Need to think this one through. When there is also Revlon Age Defying. This one has DNA technology and 96% of women thought something. Do I agree with them? Do I want to be one of many. Many cant be wrong can they? But then there is Teint Miracle from Lancome which can make Julia Roberts go from Blonde to Brunette with flawless, glowing skin. Could that work for me?

What about finding the one? Apparently Boots can help with their face cream that reduces deep wrinkles. Hmm I am srue they are right nothing scares a man away like a single, deep -wrinkled 37 year old. Scarier than Fright Night I am sure.

And then of course there is Visionnaire which has me torn. I love love love Genefique how can Visionnaire replace my love unless I can combine them to boost my love. A greater love. Is it possible? Doesnt Lancome realize the pressure they putting on me. I want them both. Help what to do?

And this my friends is why I struggle with lotions and potions...Natalie Hoegenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04237071180134125062noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7932687291233220767.post-19545051098248466482011-09-28T21:44:00.001+02:002011-09-28T21:49:03.333+02:00Fashion FrenzyI just dont understand myself sometimes. I have my preferences when it comes to fashion or my flat and none of them include multi-coloured knitwear or tablewear but the prospect of discount designer sends me into an uncontrolable frenzy. The only salvation really is that Target doesnt ship to Europe. (BTW Global market place apparently not if you are an American company) so I was saved from myself and the damage I could have caused.

So what is - the designer discount? But I really desperately needed a Missoni swimsuit there is the solution of saving up for it (I know novel idea but a recessionista with a strong will should at the very least consider it), is it the limited edition factor? I didnt have the same excitement at the thought of H&M Lavin, Jimmy Choo, Stella McCartney. So is it maybe the designer itself? Retrospectively I should have been more interested in some of the H&M collaborations but Target does achieve really top collaboration - Zac Posen, Rodarte, Paul & Joe and now Missoni to name but a few that just strike a cord with the dream fashionista that I tend to think that I am (even if only in my dreams).

And so I wonder who really shops for these discount duds? Is it a real girl chance at a Jimmy Choo set of heels or bag? Doesnt some one with a respect for design, creation, and craftmanship treasure the product and its uniqueness. My major designer extravangza tends to be the bag never to make for feel fat and a real statement piece it is my bit of luxury that is attainable even save-able. But with more and more similar bags being carried (LV monogram anyone? and I have them too so just as to blame) around it is losing its appeal and specialness in a way. Louis Vuitton themselves recently announced a re-assessment of price points to re-establish the luxury distinction.

So isnt this a bit of a catch 22? But with a recession on the cards again - who cares...Natalie Hoegenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04237071180134125062noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7932687291233220767.post-68902185501559188442011-09-18T22:29:00.002+02:002011-10-30T21:53:13.430+01:00Fashion Must HavesJippie - it is a new season and new fashion to get excited about. Here are my current wish list items - but take note my wish list is an ever changing thing... that's what makes it so fun!

www.asos.com

First of all, a good watch is a must have. I will admit I have a little bit of collection but one thing still missing is a chunky gold male version in ideally rose gold. Soft but masculine, fresh yet warm - I think this Michael Kors version is fantastic for just this purpose. And the collection is so vaste that there will be something for everyone. I am sure.

www.asos.com

The white shirt. You can really take this to the limited - fitted, boyfriend, slouchy, pleated, rouched, wide and so on and so on. A crisp white shirt can add a bit of the unexpected to any outfit or just straighten it out. I love that there a store dedicted to just this - the white shirt (think Anne Fontaine) but you can do you white shirt hunting at any fashion spot worth its name and reputation. The photo featured here is from Asos and I am in love plus for that price... whats to think about!

Ladies - please - please - please go out and buy a pencil skirt! It suits us all - curvy, straight, tall, slim, boyish and this season there are so many versions to choose from. Granted the example above is a little risky (mind you thay have a green one online too think Jenny Lyons with a white shirt) but with jersey alternatives, or zipper feature versions there will for sure be one that suits you. I love them so I have already have 3 and even my curviness am loving this sequin one with a white shirt.

Last weekend was amazing - the last little gift from the summer goddess (yes in my book summer is a women not sure why) ... cafe in the sun for lunch, dinner outside under dangling lights, a gusty Mistral wind (no idea how that got to Paris) and ... wait for it FIREWORKS.

But what I love best about a change of scenery is the fashion inspiration and what better place than PARIS. The city that prides itself in cafes galore all there to watch the world (and fashion) go by. Yum!

Now I am no expert photographer so I have to do with words and in this case here are the details:

Thursday: a welcome drink and much needed recovery time, in what felt like the gay male runaway - love how the Marc Jacobs fans put it all out there, followed by thai dinner, seated next to a lovely couple where she had a sheer pussybow blouse on, coifed chignon in a laisse-faire kind of way, with dark eyes and red bright matt lips. Wow with her dark hair and olive complexion - I was jealous. But then I saw her date ... why was a woman that lovely with him and all he did was talk about his ex. (note boys - not appropriate date behaviour)

Friday: lunch at BON - love love love the interiour service rubbish but the interiour. Followed by a spot of shopping on Rue de Passy. Rediscovered 2 things 1) my love for black and 2) my love for COS. Watch out next pay day. I loved the mix of posh put together ladies, the boho chique (sauvage) look tweens and everything in between. Not keen on the fighting for a seating with the older chique ladies from the 16th but then I always think. You know you speak the language when you can argue.

Saturday: girlie lunch at Place Victor Hugo (who was a famous writer - who knew so thankfully for Parisian street signs to educate the uneducated) followed by roaming the avenues for shopping inspiration. More black and more inspiration. Love how the ladies all where the little bracelets (hmmm by a new one everytime, every single time) and the lucky alhambra necklaces (http://nataliehoegen.blogspot.com/2011/08/iconic-jewellery.html). More envy. Dinner under the stars at Le Clocher du Village on a little square with lights dangling a hidden gem in the 16th ... and to top it off the largest fireworks in Europe ... with 31 degrees that day it was a perfect summer end to a wonderful summer.

So Sunday was back in the rain but with fashion ideas, magazines at the ready and a need to wear black ...Natalie Hoegenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04237071180134125062noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7932687291233220767.post-58319571354940679472011-09-13T20:58:00.000+02:002011-09-13T20:58:43.401+02:00Friendship - Nature or Nuture?Just recently through the amazing phenomon Facebook I got back in touch with friends from years ago - some as far back as elementary school and others from University making me realize just how global and mobile our world has become. But is social media changing the way we are, make and maintain friends?

Everyone has had the random friend invite from the guy or gal you just dont know (and not in that Friday Night - we kissed but I forgot sense no the real I just have no clue who you are sense). Now why would you do that? Surely the idea is to be in touch and part of the lives of people you are care about, are interested in and or want to stay in touch with. Maybe I am just getting old and to me some random wanting to be my 'friend' without knowing me seems a little well hmmmm what's the word - random. But is social media helping us maintain friendships?

I once read (please dont ask for the source) that we change our friends every 7 years like the closet clear out thing that I should consider doing but find really unsettling. Just recently I missed that top that I am sure I had prior to my move back to NL so was it really wise to throw it out??? So I cant do it. I cant unfriend friends. I cant even do the guy thing and stop calling. I truly believe in growing, watering and feeding friendships. Doesnt mean that I see my friends all the time but when you are the one to leave - i.e. move - you need to invest. So thank FB for saving me a few Euros on the phone bills. Because that to me is the sad thing - lives go on, and when you move you need to build a new life and so at times you end up missing and romanticising the old one. So when you are then the one wanting to stay in touch it is sometimes a little sad that you are the only having to call or email or text or in my case send smoke signals. But I get it which is why I adore technology for making it easier to reach people and let my darling friends know I miss them, care about them, think of them. So if you are reading this you have been told mwuahhh.

I dont understand people who just naturally let friendship grow and become whatever they like. Surely that isnt how you would treat your hair, nails, garden - insert any suitable comparison - so why friendship. It's not a given and like a relationship needs a bit of love and attention.

That said - let's be honest the best friendships are those that you can leave neglected for a long while and pick up where you left off. Now if only my hair would do that.

lots of love friends xNatalie Hoegenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04237071180134125062noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7932687291233220767.post-11100321295410399882011-09-13T20:37:00.000+02:002011-09-13T20:37:43.967+02:00My Life - My FashionSo a little while back it was Labour Day (US public holiday) and according to US fashion laws - the kind that only films like Serial Mom could enforce - you should no longer wear white. But Summer last until September 23rd this year so surely there is a bit of flexibility here, no?

So it occurs to me where did fashion rules come from and isnt the whole idea of discovering your own style about breaking these rules? Ages ago who would have dared to combine silver and gold accessories or worse yet black and dark blue or even combine prints. And it makes me wonder are there women out there still sticking to these rules for no real reason?

Last weekend at a girlie lunch (the best kind) we talked about white jeans and when and when not to wear them - my darling sister believes to only wear them when it is sunny but that could mean summer, fall, winter or spring.

It makes me think that rules arent really rules more guidance and it should be completely up to the individual to deal with these so - called rules in whatever way you see fit. Personally I love white and wore white in winter with black tights and a black jacket (thank you darling Kate Moss for the inspiration) and I adore midnight blue that shimmers against black trousers - it gives depth, allure and a sense of occasion (btw in my opinion trousers, dresses whichever you like) and silver and gold all the time - I really can hardly decide and with my steel and gold Baume & Mercier watch who needs to. The only one I struggle with is a mix of prints - I find myself courageous when I combine leopard print heels with a teal dress but the next step is my star print blouse (black & white) and my black pencil skirt paired with my leopard kitten heels.
Baby steps ladies - baby steps ....

good luck creating your rules and breaking them - tell me how you get on xNatalie Hoegenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04237071180134125062noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7932687291233220767.post-17575124410659495252011-08-19T12:52:00.000+02:002011-08-19T12:52:38.393+02:00new catchphrase: New York SkinnyHaving read the latest hype regarding the Paris/ New York divide in skinniness. It got me thinking. Having lived in New York and Paris (although admittedly always with international friends) you cant help but notice the skinniness that surrounds you and as a curvy girl that can be tricky to deal with.

My personal opinion is that their skinniness comes from two fundamentally different approaches to life. The Parisian gals are deer like, gamin in search of the pouty seductress whereas for me the New Yorker is focussed, drivenand determined. That's not to say skinny on both sides of the spectrum requires commitment but to me it is an overall feeling. Skinny in Paris means only indulging when appropriate and can mean living of cigarettes and espresson during the day in preparation for dinner but ideally no exercise that doesnt help the calves and in New York means strict choices no carbs in liquid or solid form, exercising relgiously. I admire both forms for their dedication. Me I get it wrong on both sides - with the special treats like cheese, Cotes de Provence Rose, Moelleux au Chocolat or on the atlantic Eggs Benedict. But I do want to make smarter choices and live more 20/80 than 50/50.

I wonder how much the female role models in our world play a role in all of this. If your mum told you to watch the sweets or commented as you were growing up does that heighten your sensivity? Or if you mum herself was always watching her weight is it just something that was passed on? My mum embraced motherhood and say it as a separate part to being attractive in the way her former self was. She indulged. When we moved back to Holland from the States she went overboard on all the Dutch goodies she had missed and so did we. She did look for comfort food and I do it too. But I know this things so why cant I break the spiral? Any tips? Mind you my goal is sexy, curvy and healthy so all about balance. But I do see the benefits.

To me the skinny skinny approach does have its benefits and does require serious dedication and I sadly need more discpline. That sad I am off on a French holiday next week and I will dig the bread basket, will have the summer wine, will have a pudding if the urge strikes me and even though I am at the beach I wont feel guilty (at least not until I get home). I will admire the amazing younger gals around and will be inspired to do better but whilst I am there - HELLO let's enjoy!
Do I start dreaming of fall fashions to come? Do I linger in the feeling that summer is still here and enjoy the last of the summer wine?

Thankfully this year I am lucky enough to have a mini sun break ahead of me so I can still dream of all the lovely flowly bright, light maxi dresses until my heart is content but admittedly I have headed to the news agents a few times this week to see if my fashion mags highly awaited September issues have arrived. I will admit I was mortified this morning when I asked when they were expecting to receive the US Vogue and the woman behind the counter just glazed over and mumbled something along the lines of 'uh I dont know'.

Surely with me there are more fashionista in dreaming (ie. those a little less financial afluent than their counterpart the fashionista in making) that are looking out for this biblic issue to appear.

So what is it about september issues of Instyle, Red, Glamour, Vogue, Elle - this list is endless that makes my heart beat faster? Easy - EYE CANDY! Lusting after the next must haves, seeing how the figure enviable and fashion savy combine it all to make me dream even further.

It does make me wonder if we women say we dress for each other in some kind of subconcious competition self expression who is the fashionista dressing for. Her peers? Me? Surely it cant be men. I love the articles about our female latest fashion must haves and the male take on it all with my loved wedges never making the male top list. Ahhh but height and comfort cant be beat in my book. Back to the fashionista if she is dressing for me, honey let me tell you - you win. Hands down I bow to thee. Thank you for brighting my september, making me long for the september issues and inspiring my fashion take every season again.
Where would I be without you?
much love. Natalie Hoegenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04237071180134125062noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7932687291233220767.post-6081968470057974652011-08-08T21:32:00.000+02:002011-08-08T21:32:48.035+02:00Iconic JewelleryMaybe you have noticed by now ... I have thing for jewellery and accessories and although I try to upload the rule of remove one item (not clothes boys) before leaving the shoes sometimes they are just all so lovely that choosing just isnt fair.

So I went back to thinking where did my love of sparkly things come from. Maybe it is genetic like all girls love for pink? I think in my case it comes from my mother. After all she was working as a sales person at a high range jewellery store in the Netherlands when she met my father (I know it would have been much more musical had I written - working as a waitress in a cocktail bar - sadly that is not true). My mother has a brilliant understanding of jewellery notices little details that I over the years have picked up on. With this background knowledge... I have a love for iconic jewellery and here are some of my favourites...

But surely to love and appreciate yourself jusifies being able to buy it for yourself one day? No?

There is something enchanting about the quatre-fois. It is used a great deal in Arabic buildings and in the Moorish Alhambra. I love the Van Cleef & Arpels use of mother of pearl. A true classic.

As so many fashion forward women the male watch is the one to have but if I get to dream as much as I love the Ballon from Cartier or the Submariner from Rolex (especially the Oyster band) it is the Royal Oak from Audermars Piquet that makes quiet in appreciation.

Not sure which came first - but I love thin, fine jewellery and this Love Paloma Picasso for Tiffany necklace is a symbol of just that.

Finally keep it simple - diamond studs, diamond solitaire you get the idea. Diamonds by the Yard another Tiffany classic now also comes in sterling silver with 1-3-5 diamonds bracelets and necklaces alike. Bringing the dream closer.
